Exploring the Mayan Ruins of Tulum

Family visiting Tulum ruins

The Mayan ruins of Tulum are a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient civilizations and breathtaking views. Perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Tulum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of the Mayan people. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll be transported back in time, imagining what life was like in this once-thriving city. The iconic Temple of the Frescoes and El Castillo are just a few of the impressive structures you’ll encounter during your visit. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the awe-inspiring beauty of Tulum from every angle. After exploring the ruins, take a refreshing dip in the nearby beach to cool off and soak in the stunning surroundings. The combination of history and natural beauty makes Tulum a truly unforgettable experience.

Discovering the Cenotes of Playa del Carmen

Aerial image of cenote azul in Tulum Mexico

Hidden beneath the surface of Playa del Carmen’s lush jungles lie the cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock. These cenotes are not only stunningly beautiful but also hold great cultural significance to the Mayan people. Swimming in the crystal-clear waters of a cenote is like entering a hidden paradise, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. Some cenotes even have underwater caves waiting to be explored by adventurous divers. Whether you prefer to swim, snorkel, or dive, the cenotes of Playa del Carmen offer a unique and unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear or book a guided tour to make the most of your cenote adventure. Discovering these hidden gems will leave you in awe of the natural wonders that lie beneath the surface. Here’s our short list of Playa del Carmen cenotes:

1. Cenote Azul is probably the best cenote for children in Playa del Carmen : large, with very clear water, shallow water areas, several places to rest (pier, rocks, etc.), with a platform to jump into the water ( 4 m) and a picnic area, ideal for taking a lunch or snacks.

  • There is an open area, surrounded by beautiful vegetation, and a covered area to be in the shade.

  • Entrance 120 pesos, 80 pesos for 5 to 8 years old, free for children 4 years old and under

  • Snorkeling equipment 70 pesos, life jackets 70 pesos

  • Open from 8am to 6pm

2. Chaak Tun Cenote, in my opinion, is the cenote you absolutely have to visit in Playa del Carmen for a few reasons.

First, it is the only cenote in the middle of Playa del Carmen (10 minutes from downtown), but also because it is one of the most beautiful caves in the Riviera Maya!

The guided tour takes you through 2 flooded caves and 1 dry cave :

  • Pixan

  • Xibalba

  • Aluxes

Snorkeling in the crystal clear waters and walking around with a flashlight, you will see a multitude of stalactites, stalagmites, fish and ceramic offerings.

But, of course, this is only a small part of this huge underwater world, since Chaak Tun is part of Sac Actun , the largest flooded cave system in the world.

  • It is mandatory to take a guided tour , for conservation and safety reasons.

  • Chaak Tun website

3. Chac Mool Cenote is a beautiful cenote, perfect for diving in Playa del Carmen without having much experience. You do need to be open water certified or equivalent.  But it is not necessary to have taken the cave diving course , since a fairly wide area is explored, with a maximum depth of 12m.

There are beautiful caves with roots, stalactites and stalagmites, limestone columns and turquoise water that offers excellent visibility, shot through with some nice rays of light. There are 2 entrances to the Chac Mool cenote: the main one and another called “Little Brother” or “Hermanito” that lead to the same spaces. The first cave is quite large and bright, and the second is full of stalactites of all sizes. There is also a natural dome where you can breathe out of the water and see the roots and rock formations.

A phenomenon called a halocline can also be observed : when saltwater and freshwater come together but do not mix due to their density difference. It’s pretty awesome!

Although Chac Mool is a very interesting cenote in Playa del Carmen for beginner divers , please keep these points in mind if you wish to visit Chac Mool:

  • Always follow the reels (guide lines) and do not go in areas restricted to the public.

  • Entrance to the cenote 250 pesos (guide and equipment apart)

  • Shower, toilets, dressing rooms and a small restaurant

  • Minimum age 12 years

4. Cenote Tajma-Ha has a resemblance to the Taj Mahal that is no coincidence.  It used to be named before, but it has changed over the years to become Tajma Ha (“ha” means water in Mayan).

It is one of the best cenotes to dive in Playa del Carmen , especially recommended for advanced divers .

You can get to the entrance of the cave with an open water certificate, but to really go through the tunnels it is better to have experience so as not to get stuck.

The dive lasts around 1 hour, at a maximum depth of 15m. As you progress through the underwater cave, you will see fossils, stalactites, stalagmites, and a fairly dense halocline.

  • Entry 150 pesos

  • Open from 10am to 6pm

  • 30 km south of Playa del Carmen, taking Highway 307. The entrance is 2 km from the main road, following a dirt road

You can also go to Tajma-Ha just for swimming and diving, but the area is quite small.

I recommend it only for diving , otherwise you can go elsewhere.

5. Great Cenote is a great option for everyone!

For families, because it is supervised, with all the comforts and a large picnic area

  • For those who want to easily swim and snorkel in clearwater (with turtles!)

  • For advanced divers, as it is part of Sac Actun, the largest system of underwater caves in the world

  • For travelers who want to see the most in one day, since it is strategically located near Tulum , Cobá and other cenotes

The first part of the cenote is outside and you can go through a 20-meter tunnel to the second part that is covered under a rock wall… where the water is completely transparent!

It is a beautiful cenote but it is quite touristy, so it is better to arrive before 10 in the morning 😉

  • Entrance 500 pesos, locker 30 pesos, snorkeling equipment 80 pesos

  • Open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
